Summary

In SpikerSoft Chemistry, clicking on elements in the interactive periodic table does not trigger the expected behavior. According to the menu guide, clicking an element should open a detail card displaying information about that element. However, no interaction occurs, and the browser console shows no output or errors.

Issue Description

The interactive 3D periodic table (sphere, grid, helix, or table view) visually renders correctly, but element selection is non-functional. Clicking on any element fails to open its detail card or trigger any response. The browser console remains empty, suggesting that the click event listener is either missing or not properly bound to the element objects.

Environment

Property Value
Application SpikerSoft Chemistry
Module Interactive Periodic Table
Environment Production
Browser Firefox / Chrome
Operating System Windows 11
Version v2026.09.27E
Device Desktop

Preconditions

User must open spikersoft.com/chemistry and interact with the periodic table in any view mode (Sphere, Table, Helix, or Grid).

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open SpikerSoft Chemistry.
  2. Select any view mode (Sphere, Table, Helix, or Grid).
  3. Click on any element tile (e.g., “Pu”, “Ce”, “Os”).
  4. Observe that no detail card appears and no console output is generated.

Expected Result

Clicking on an element should open a detail card displaying its name, symbol, atomic number, and other relevant data.

Actual Result

  • No action occurs when clicking elements.
  • No console logs or errors are generated.
  • The interface remains static.

Evidence

  • The screenshot shows the Sphere view of the periodic table with interactive elements visible but unresponsive.
  • Console output is empty after multiple click attempts.

Impact

  • Breaks core functionality of the Chemistry module.
  • Prevents users from accessing element details.
  • Reduces educational and interactive value of the feature.

Frequency

Always

Reproducibility

100%

Severity

High

Suggested Fix

  • Verify that click event listeners are properly attached to element objects.
  • Check for missing or broken JavaScript bindings in the rendering script.
  • Ensure the detail card component is initialized and accessible in all view modes.
  • Add console logging for click events to aid debugging.

Thanks for this report — you found a real bug, and the root cause is worth sharing because it's a classic.

What's going on: the tiles do have click handling (clicking one should fly it forward and open its detail card). But the 3D camera controls — the part that lets you drag to rotate — use a browser feature called pointer capture: on mouse-down they tell the browser "send every pointer event to me until the button is released." So the mouse-up event no longer reports which tile you were over; it reports the whole 3D canvas. Our code read that as "clicked empty space" and quietly did nothing — which is also why the console stayed empty. Our automated tests used a fake version of the camera controls, so they never hit this. (Keyboard still works: Tab to a tile, press Enter.)

Why I'm closing it: the Chemistry module has been deprecated and removed from the Learn menu, so it's not being worked on right now. If Chemistry comes back, this is the fix to apply: remember which tile was under the pointer on mouse-down instead of asking again on mouse-up.

Nice work testing a hidden corner of the site — and for noting the empty console, which pointed straight at "no error, the event just isn't reaching the tile."
